Cervical cancer screening is undergoing a major transformation, shifting from traditional cytology to advanced HPV testing in many countries. This change holds the promise of improved cancer detection but also poses challenges, such as managing increased positivity rates without escalating costs.

At the same time, a growing cohort of young women vaccinated against HPV—who face a significantly lower lifetime risk of cervical cancer—are now reaching screening age. These women may not require the same screening intensity, opening the door to more personalized approaches.

For the past five years, the RISCC project has been at the forefront of this evolution, exploring how to make cervical cancer screening programs more efficient, cost-effective, and equitable. Our groundbreaking risk-based management approach tailors screening to the actual risk of developing cervical disease, rather than relying solely on test results.
